It's pretty sad to think of what "The Taste of Amherst" has become. When it first started years ago, the idea was for local restaurants to sell samples or "tastes") of some of their more popular items. Not only was it a great promo gig, but a really fun event for the whole community.

But as you pointed out some spots, like Judie's, "Judie told me it's an awful lot of work for pretty much break even proposition" don't make enough profit so why bother. If you're not willing to pay $5.00 for a popover in her restaurant then you're shit outta luck.

Fortunately year after year and much less greedy participants like The Pub, Amherst Brewing Co.,Lhasa Cafe, Bart's, Panda East, etc still feel giving back is what the Taste was meant to be since it's beginning.

So bravo to the past, present and future contributors to this fun filled family event. Let the likes of Judie continue to show her true color. Green.

Oh, I think you're being a tad hard on Judie. Which of course is easy to do as a CAN.

Anyone who has run a small business (obviously not you) knows it is an all consuming task.

And for her, setting up at the Taste is like opening a second business for those 3 or 4 days.

anon 5:08, which was it meant to be "when it started years ago"

a place for local restaurants to sell samples, a great promo gig?

or a place to "give back"?

why is this idea that businesses need to "give something back" such a prevalent sentiment?
