In & Out Sweets

Insomnia Cookies opened last week in time for the Community Fair

Town center -- the heart of our business district -- lost a somewhat established business but gained a new one to keep things in balance.  Such is the trying nature of small business.

 For sale or lease

FroyoWorld frozen yogurt opened a few years ago in direct competition with GoBerry pretty much across the street, but now their freezers are shut down.

Amherst is not so much a mecca for frozen treats as iconic Ben & Jerry's couldn't survivive in the downtown and equally revered Bart's Ice Cream was saved by a last minute buyout and their name change to Amherst Ice Cream.

The big advantage with cookies is they are easy to deliver, which I'm sure will make up the major portion of Insomnia Cookies business.

After all, who doesn't like warm cookies delivered to your door at 3:00 AM?

What is the current status of Sugar Jones?

I think they are still in business in my old building at 460 West Street, South Amherst.

I stopped in at Insomnia Cookies on Saturday. I was not impressed. I'll not be returning.

Cookie place will last 6 months. Break down the overhead for a cookie and it's impossible to pay the rent.

Sometimes the logic behind business decisions defies logic. A Frozen Yogurt shop closes just as summer begins and a cookie delivery business opens just as the college students leave?

Wrong time of year to be opening. They should have waited until September. Sugar Jones is used to the competition though. When they opened there was another cookie & ice cream delivery business at the same time but Sugar Jones beat them out.

Well, they have 90 locations so they must be doing something right. And they are apparently well capitalized. Maybe positioning for legalization this fall? I wish them well.

Yay for GoBerry for outlasting the competition. Better product, while at the same time, keeping it local.

@Anonymous 2:13pm how did that workout for other national chains that came and failed in Amherst? Ben & Jerry's, Papa Genos, D'Angelos, JGumbo, and the recently shuttered Froyoworld who also has locations all over the country.

Who remembers McDonald's mini in downtown?

Bad location for a delivery business!
