Can You Hear Me Now?

Jones Library this morning

After an outage of four hours and forty three minutes due to server issues the extensive downtown public wifi system is back up and running.

This total outage was only the second time in six years the system went down, with the first time being the notorious 2011 Halloween snowstorm that knocked out power to the entire town.

Fortunately Amherst Town Hall now has a generator.   So if another major power outage should occur, the Internet around Town Hall, Police headquarters and Central Fire Station will stay up.

It is such a pet peeve of mine when people tape things to the monitor screen. Taping it on the bezel above the screen is fine, but people....!

This is minutia and not worth reporting.

Tell that to all the downtown businesses who rely on the system.

These days Internet is as vital as electricity or natural gas.

I don't know how anyone can rely on the town free wifi, especially businesses. It has an extremely weak signal and is practically unusable when inside (and sometimes when outside). I can't get a signal outside of the post office, in Judie's or at Pasta E Basta, to name 3 places. The signal ranges swiftly and frequently from nothing (invisible)to 3 bars.

It doesn't seem at all realistic or practical for a business to depend on free WIFI since it is so vital to the daily operation of most businesses.

The free WiFi is not intended to work inside. It's designed to give people WiFi outdoors for people on park benches, etc.

I think Obama should pass a free internet for the whole country bill.
It's bull shit that the at&t and Verizon think they own the internet that Al Gore created.
