Yes, buried under all that ice and snow there's a sidewalk ... somewhere.

I sure hope they got a warning ticket threatening a fine of $1 to $500 for not shoveling like I did. Happy new year! It's costing me to hire someone to do that since my bad back prevents me from shoveling.
I'm not sure how much help shoveling the sidewalk is. During the day, the snow melts and then freezes during the night making them treacherous to walk on. I say, stay off the sidewalks and walk on the road, facing traffic. I think shoveling the sidewalks is a waste of time.
I would totally disagree, sidewalks are for safety so you do not have to walk on the street. I'd rather slip on the sidewalk than have a car slip and nail into me. Sure they get icy, but so doesn't my front steps. Please shovel your sidewalks for the safety of everyone. Even drivers do not want to have to dodge pedestrians on the street. And for the most part the largest pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks is most likely during the day anyway, so night time ice has less of an impact
You gotta be kidding what would it take 5 or ten minutes to clear the side walk, the fine should be changed to include those who reside in the premisses,
A few years ago they sent that warning to residents on Glendale and they still keep them clear. Meanwhile over on Longmeadow you wouldn't even know there's a sidewalk until the spring thaw.
According to the town's sidewalk clearing policy (http://www.amherstma.gov/index.aspx?NID=156), Main Street is on the list of the sidewalks that are plowed by the town, so this owner isn't responsible for clearing the sidewalk here. Owners are still responsible for clearing curb cuts at corners.
For the sidewalks the town doesn't clear, the fine for not shoveling is just $10. It used to be more, but the greater fine wasn't in compliance with MGL. $10 is not enough to change behavior and it costs more than $10 to hire someone to shovel for you.

And all the other homes and businesses along Main Street seemed to have cleared their portion of sidewalk.

Larry, check the bylaw...it's laughable and not a deterant....

Why not just start arresting people? No one has a problem with doing this for noise, and this seems a bit more of a safety issue than noise...
