Eastern Hampshire District Court this fine summer morning
So for those of you who think I spend too much time documenting the sorry underbelly of Amherst i.e. drunk driving and other drug/alcohol related carnage please take note: For the 2nd Monday morning in a row Amherst Police Department had no arrests/arraignments in Eastern Hampshire District Court.
And yes, based on my boots on the ground coverage of said District Court that is a tad unusual, sort of like a man biting a dog (or a woman scratching a cat).
The relative calm will only last until this coming weekend with the return of our vital and exuberant "college aged youth."
Kick back, suck down the lemonade and enjoy the leisure paced summer quiet over the next few days ... because change is just around the corner.

Good news, but only an indicator. I don't think arrests really reflect the crime level, too many other variables. It could reflect how many police are on vacation right now (logically likely high right now), it could reflect that they were afraid of the public (not likely, but this did reduce the crime "rate" in NYC, while the crime was actually increasing). The police don't even know about most crime, we all know that because we all break the law constantly without getting arrested.
Despite this, less police locking people up even for one minute is outstanding news. Thank you for reporting it, as it is a major issue in the US, who's police lock up more by # and % than any other nation, china and russia included.
My overall impression is APD takes no pleasure in locking people up.
Left wing nut job.
Was a similar decline shown in the arrests of the other area departments and hence the court's workload? If so, then it is the Seasonal August Slump.
If not, then it is quite significant.
Small population notwithstanding.
"Left wing nut job", did you have a comment or were you just leaving your name?
JSYK- With this story pinned at the top of your twitter page- I assumed you were on vacation (and missed the newer tweets below it)
