Let's get licking those stamps

While The People's Republic of Amherst is now at the exact overall national average of 69% return for mailed census forms, we still lag behind our conscientious neighbors like Hadley at 76% or South Hadley at 81% or Granby at 83%.

And I would bet those nearby towns also have a better average voter turnout for their local elections as well.

My off campus student friends said they were told that UMass will automatically count them, so they didn't see a need to do a census, and promptly circular filed the form. So I thik it is the students dragging down our average. These guys live in Hadley though.

AMHERST – A 22-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday night when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle on Main Street.

The motorist drove away from the scene without reporting the accident, which occurred at about 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Gray Street. Police said they have spoken to witnesses and are now searching for a dark-colored sedan that is believed to have been involved.

The victim, Matthew Oliverio, of Amherst, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield by ambulance. Hospital officials said his condition has been upgraded to fair.

Police are following leads from witnesses. Anyone with information about the accident should contact the Amherst Police detective bureau at (413)259-3015.

Since it was a hit and run we will probably never know.
