Out of Gas

Hess Express, West Street, South Amherst

The Hess Express in South Amherst, one of the busiest convenience stores in town, is now a major construction site (but remains open for business) as underground gas storage tanks are replaced and diesel fuel will be added to the volatile mix.

Last week the Amherst Select Board, acting as liquor commissioners, unanimously denied the business a beer/wine permit specifically because it is so strategically located and perpetually busy, fearing the wrong person at the wrong time will pick up a couple of cold ones to go.

Like the Atkins Corner Construction project a mile down the road, the mess is expected to be cleared by the time UMass and Amherst College open for business. We hope.

Larry, you're funny.

I try to keep it simple (especially on a Sunday).

Were they ordered to change the tanks? Were there leaks or was it just time to change them to stave off leaks? Just wondering.

I did not see any workers dressed in space suits, so I don't think there's been a leak.

I believe all gas stations have to change out their tanks annually. As a preventive measure to not have leakage.

Wow! This really big news! What's next a tag sale? Someone mowing a lawn?

There has been some heavy weeding going on ... hey, you don't have to read this! We like the small home town feel of the blog. Go pick some wings off flies.

The man is vigilant.

That's what we come here for.

Anon 9:26 I wholeheartedly agree. We are lucky that in this town the blog focuses on gas station tank replacement, flag controversies, and obnoxious party houses instead of shootings, stabbings, and muggings.

At the tamer end of the spectrum, Amherst, and Larry's meticulously tended blog, are in little danger of ever slipping into real small-town mode, e.g. "Ida and Mae visited Edna after bingo this past Sunday, and were treated to generous portions of Edna's famed leek-and-Miracle-Whip dumplings."

I was thinking the very same.

You can't get your beer at the CONVENIENCE store. Instead you can cross the street and get it with an extra stop. Isn't that convenient.

How did Atkin's get beer and wine? Ever try to get in and out of there on a weekend?

Boy, you haven't lived in this town very long.

They have to change out the tanks every 30 years, not annually.
