Party House of the Weekend

41 Hobart Lane

While most responsible adults spent Saturday evening preparing for the wrath of Hurricane Irene (which fortunatley never arrived) these bad boys were having an end of the world--or perhaps start of the semester--party. Or maybe, since it was the main leaseholder's 20th birthday, a birthday bash.

The Amherst Police Department is serious about keeping our community safe and comfortable for all citizens--and that includes "quiet enjoyment" of one's most important asset, their homes.

According to police narrative:

"Approximately 50 guests standing outside of number 41. Estimate another 30-40 inside drinking and shouting. Resident identified and issued TBL (town bylaw) for noise. Guests cleared out."

Why do you keep saying the hurricane never showed up in amherst???? Have you driven around and seen the fallen trees? Have you seen the raging rivers around town? Fort River? Mill River? The Puffers Pond waterfall??? Have you seen the people pumping out their basements??

I know you think of yourself as a journalist...I hate to tell you this, Larry. A true journalist you are not and never will be.

Key words in the sentence were "wrath of."

And Anons like you are F-A-R from what journalists consider a "reliable source."

My take on this is that because Larry did not have any problems from the hurricane it just didnt happen.

Many people have had flooded basements and damage from downed trees due to the non-existent hurricane.

Yep, when the college kids come no more, when Amherst becomes a vast backwater of welfare dependancy, yep, thank the APD....

Even if the University were a ghost town, do you think Amherst College and Hampshire College would also dry up and blow away?

Thank you to the police department, who are stopping these kids from killing themselves with alcohol while they let me have some peace and quiet.

Among the things that I worry about for Amherst, the college kids not coming is about last on the list.

A fire department that can't reach all places in town in a reasonable amount of time.

An overwhelmed police department.

A public school system resistant to change and public criticism that more and more parents opt out of.

A governmental system stuck in pastoral fantasies of days gone by and unable to respond to the municipal challenges of the present and future.

An inhospitable business climate that no one with an entrepreneurial spirit wants to come to and employ people.

Now there are some things to worry about.

Hampshire, definitely, and Amherst has 1,795 students -- UMass has three times as many GRADUATE students....

The housing market went bust. Why won't the higher ed market follow it????

Bull Connor received similar kudos a half century ago from equally bigoted and prejudicial individuals wanting to keep another hated & oppressed group "in their place."

And what happened -- 15 years later, one of "them" was mayor! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Arrington,_Jr.

No, I am not saying that the UM students will ever run this town -- BUT THE STATE VERY WELL MIGHT AND DO NOT FORGET THAT THE GRUNTWORK 'IN THE BUILDING' IS DONE BY UM GRADS WHO *HATE* AMHERST....

And Amherst truly sucks. There is nothing like spending some time in the rest of America to realize just how badly Amherst sucks....

Oh my God...leave it to Ed to conflate the APD with Bull Connor. It trivializes a brave people's struggle to imply any equivalence between those days and the present irritant of rowdy students.
