Leaving A Good Taste

Taste of Amherst looked good from any angle

According to Interim Chamber of Commerce Director Jerry Guidera this year's Taste of Amherst was about the best ever due to a combination of wonderful weather and a fine tuned array of offerings from all the food vendors as well as a live music and things for the young or young at heart.

Or maybe is was the full page ad in Hampshire Life using a cool background photo:

Either way, best of all (also weather related) our historic Town Common did not take a beating.

A Different Taste?

Taste of Amherst Thursday 6:45 PM

Next year on the 25th silver anniversary of the Taste of Amherst food offerings may not quite be the same as they have since inception.  As in, no fresh fried food on site.

Because of a relatively new law that requires open air fryolaters to have an (expensive) fire suppression system, like they do inside a bricks-and-mortar restaurants, their use at the Taste of Amherst will cease next year.  Currently six venders out of 21 use fryolaters.

 Assistant Chief Don McKay Statement

When it comes to the Taste of Amherst, an iconic culinary event the town is justifiably proud of, cooperation from all stakeholders is key.  Perhaps the main reason the Taste has been a huge success all these years.   (Besides the great food of course.)

But nothing is more paramount than public safety.

Town Meeting recently approved spending $10,000 for "spider boxes" to mitigate electrical chord chaos that ensues on the Town Common with major events like The Taste.  Because electricity can be a dangerous thing.

Anyone who has ever experienced a grease fire knows how explosively scary they are.  Mix in a multitude of untrained civilians near combustible tents, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Fryolators are segregated off in their own enclosed area (not under a tent)

The Chamber of Commerce will meet with town officials at the conclusion of this year's Taste to cook up a firm plan for next year, which could include appealing AFD's interpretation of the law to the State Fire Marshal or simply requesting restaurants not offer food that requires a fryolator.

Venders could also fry food at their regular establishment and then ferry it to the Town Common.

The Taste & Price Of Safety

Taste of Amherst (always late  June) 2014

The Taste of Amherst, that downtown summer institution that brings bliss to Valley foodies and our local restaurant industry, will get a tad safer if Amherst Town Meeting approves DPW Chief Guilford Mooring's $20,000 capital request for Park Replacement Equipment.  As will that other major event, Extravaganja.

Technically the historic Amherst town common is a park.

And the current electrical system becomes a spider web of potentially dangerous cords anytime there's a major function. Because some of those major events attract thousands of visitors, a shocking incident is always a possibility.

The $12,000 worth of Spider Boxes will not only organize all the temporary wiring to help reduce tripping over them, but also brings important ground fault circuit interrupter protection, which comes in handy on rainy days.

The Merry Maple "holiday" tree on the town common was knocked out a couple times last December due to a combination of faulty wiring and rainy weather.

Merry Maple will be insulated against  power outages

The FY16 budget does not commence until July 1st -- a tad too late for this year's Taste of Amherst.

Guilford Mooring pitching to the Joint Capital Planning Committee 2/5/15

But Mr. Mooring is hoping to get the Business Improvement District and Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce to front the money to buy the spider boxes as soon as possible, and then reimburse them out of his FY16 budget, assuming Town Meeting approves the $20,000 capital item.

Last Chance For Foodies

Taste of Amherst Saturday 6:00 PM

Today (noon until 4:00 PM) closes out perhaps the best four-day run ever for the Taste of Amherst -- at least as measured by oftentimes finicky New England weather.

And with outdoor events like the Taste, weather alone is a make or break proposition.

In addition to the free trolley maybe the Chamber of Commerce hired a witch doctor to do a marathon sun dance.

Farmers Market also packed them in on Saturday

Organizers were not overly pleased with the location chosen by a food cart early Saturday afternoon directly across the street.

But when APD tried to move them, turns out their town issued ($100) permit did not contain a "do not compete" with the Taste clause.

Food Carts have never been overly popular with bricks and mortar restaurants in town

Aftertaste

 West side of town common

The torrential rains that postponed the opening of the 22nd Annual Taste of Amherst last Thursday also primed conditions for that other byproduct of a successful public event on the town common:  turf damage.

Yes the town common is public space freely used by the general public.   But large events like the Taste of Amherst, Pot Rally and Town Fair do more than their share of damage, that has to be repaired at public expense.

 Northeast side of town common

The town should simply enact a fee for large events IF they end up causing damage, much like landlords collect a security deposit prior to leasing an apartment.

Taste So Good

Jada loved the Chinese food
Tonight's crowd at the 22nd Annual Taste of Amherst seemed to make up for last night's wash out as pretty much the entire town common was almost shoulder to shoulder with pedstrians, most of them eating.

Atkins Country Market, all the way from deep South Amherst

The only thing that seemed equally popular was the area in front of the stage set aside for hula hooping.

The feast runs through Sunday 4:00 p.m. and the weather is projected to be as cooperative as it was this evening.

Game On!

Taste of Amherst prepared for Friday opening

Bring your galoshes and maybe an umbrella, the once delayed 22nd annual Taste of Amherst will not  be twice denied.  (Virtual) Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and if you just want to walk around and smell the food, entry is free.

Raining On Our Parade

Raindrops keep falling on my head ...

Well, actually, The 22nd Annual Taste Of Amherst.

Breaking news from Chamber Director Tony Maroulis: the culinary event is cancelled for TONIGHT, but God  (or Allah) willing will be more than happening on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday 6/14, 5-10pm; Saturday 6/15, 12-10pm; and Sunday 6/16, 12-4pm.

You don't bring me flowers ...

On a cheerier note the Amherst Business Improvement District has installed flower arrangements throughout the heart of the downtown, brightening up even a rainy day.

You Can Beat City Hall

Well in this case, Amherst Town Hall.

So I had my 10:00 AM appeals hearing with Town Collector Claire McGinnis and gave her my story: No signs at the behind Town Hall hidden parking lot to inform us hapless motorists that parking enforcement is until 8:00 PM rather than 6:00 PM as it is in the more prominently located lots in front of Town Hall, with accompanying large signs prominently displaying those 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM hours.

So she voided my ticket received on a gorgeous Friday night 6:05 PM on my way to the truly tasteful Taste of Amherst.  Guess now I do not have to create a "I hate parking in Amherst" website....

Sweet & Sour

Taste of Amherst Day 2

 Fearless Jada flying

Just when you safely thought Amherst town center could not get any more inviting--the aroma of food from a plethora of providers, a live band rocking the crowd, weather more gorgeous than the day before, all topped off by a BIG beautiful American flag flapping high over the proceedings--you come upon THIS:

Parking Ticket (bad) Taste of Amherst

A friendly reminder of the town's anti-business demeanor.

Large signs distributed throughout parking lot in front of Town Hall

Why is it the town allows free parking around Christmas to attract visitors to the downtown but not for the biggest event of the year--The Taste of Amherst?

If you really squint you can see the 8AM to 8PM on paystation behind Town Hall, but no other signage

Boxers figured out a long time ago that the closing round of a fight is the one that makes a lasting impression on the judges.  Topping off a fun family night with a parking ticket leaves behind a very bad taste--one that makes consumers think twice about patronizing the downtown.

Tasty Treats

Jada enjoys dessert @ Taste of Amherst

The key ingredient for making an outdoor food festival a BIG success was ever present last night and will be for the next few days, possibly pushing the 21st annual Taste of Amherst into the record books for attendance.

Great opening night crowd

Food samples from 23 restaurants, round-the-clock entertainment and cold beer...what more could you ask for?  Family and friends of course; and if last night is any indication, everybody seemed to be with somebody--all having a good time.

Amherst Tastes Just Fine

A banner that makes you hungry hangs over downtown Amherst

So Amherst may have lost a traditional, fun, family-oriented 4th of July Parade that attracted throngs of celebratory people to the downtown, but another quaint tradition is alive and well:  The Taste of Amherst.

Yes, Northampton--a mecca of fine dining--may have given up on the culinary crowd source concept but Amherst is still going strong...20+ years and counting.  This year 23 restaurants will be offering their favorite wares:  great affordable food, served quickly and conveniently on compostable plates.  Sustainable Amherst gets greener by the day.

In addition to a potpourri of fine foods the Taste also provides that adult favorite, beer.  Local institutions Amherst Brewing Company and Rafters will provide craft brews served by friendly barkeeps.  While WRSI, "The River", will provide music from a remote soundstage with live bands scheduled  throughout the four day event.

Kids will love Magician Fran Ferry (who will conjure up perfect weather) and all the cute critters from the Forest Park Zoo.

Beer, music, food and a boatload of happy people clustered in beautiful downtown Amherst.  I can't think of a better way to spend Father's Day.

Hours for the Taste of Amherst, sponsored by Atkins Farm Country Market, are Thursday, June 14, 5-9pm; Friday, June 15, 5-10pm; Saturday, June 16, 12-10pm; and Sunday, June 17, 12-4pm.

Amherst shows great taste

If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach then women up and down the Valley will have an easy time reminding their loved ones they are still appreciated this Fathers Day with a fun, convenient, cost effective jaunt to town center for the 20th anniversary "Taste of Amherst".

The culinary event overtakes Amherst center June 16th through 19th, with over twenty restaurants already signed up for the annual community fest.

Yes, the Taste of Amherst has withstood the test of time--precisely because because it never gets old or stale. Other towns, most notably Northampton the Holy Land of restaurants, succumbed to apathy and no longer stage such an event.

Because Amherst is such a transient community with thousand of college students coming and going annually, us townies set a high benchmark for folks who move into town and wish to be taken seriously. Twenty years is the minimum cutoff. As a fifth generation resident, I now declare the Taste of Amherst something to be taken seriously...in a fun sort of way.

Hours for the Taste of Amherst are Thursday, June 16, 5-9 pm; Friday, June 17, 5 -10 pm; Saturday, June 18, 12-10 pm; and Sunday, June 19, 12 – 4 pm.
