Sunday Construction Update

Hampshire College 17,500 sq ft R.W. Kern Center, a "living building"
8,500 sq ft Hitchcock Center, a drone's throw from R.W. Kern Center, also a "living building"
Amherst College Greenway Dorms
Olympia Place: non tradition luxury dorms near UMass on the tax rolls
UMass Integrated Design Building
UMass Physical Sciences building just getting started

And I would be remiss if I did not mention all these nifty new buildings will be protected by overworked understaffed Amherst Fire Department.

What happened to all the big, beautiful trees that were there for the past century or more?

The "campus as arboretum" has been defiled….

If you're referring to UMass the buildings going up are located where parking lots had been prior to construction. Seems like an improvement to me.

What would happen if Town Meeting revoked funding for APD and AFD to serve UMass?

Couldn't happen. UMass was designed from the get go to be protected by AFD, yet the state did create a police force (UMPD) to protect students on campus.

No Larry, the UMPD evolved out of the campus security -- night watchmen.

@8:04AM: the new physical sciences building will be built where the old West Experiment Station once stood. Yes, there was a tiny parking area next to it, but there were also dozens of large, mature trees - one at least 3 feet in diameter at breast height - that were destroyed to "prepare the site" for whatever comes next. Of late, UMass has treated its trees like so much grass to mow….

So I'm with the BLWB@2:16AM on this issue - the campus arboretum is dead - long live the arboretum!
