That's a (final) wrap

"That's a wrap"at 23 North Pleasant St. in downtown Amherst is no more.  But they still have locations in Pittsfield, Dalton and Williamstown, although kind of far for take out.

The sandwich shop opened just under a year ago.  And since restaurants occupy the top of the list for start up failures, I guess it's not shocking news.  They seem to have followed the business model of Bueno Y Sano by targeting college towns, although that popular burrito establishment is just around the corner, while local culinary icon Antonio's Pizza is only two doors down.

White Hut also recently opened nearby.  Downtown Amherst is like a Mall's food court, with the rents almost as high.  A small business is full time enough when the product you offer is non perishable.  Throw in the fresh ingredient factor and the work is never done.

But more will come.  They always do.

I'm surprised at this development, especially considering the "fresh, organic" craze fitting right in with the company image. Any word on prospective replacements, or will another knock off liquor store fulfill this hollow space?

  2. The prices were way too high at Thats A Wrap. I ate lunch there once and never returned.

  7. They had odd hours. Sometimes they were closed by 5pm which did not help them.

A few weeks ago they were closed for a full week, then for two days there was a sign on he door saying "Opening Feb 13th under new ownership" ... on Feb 14th te place was cleaned out of everything that wasn't nailed down.

  9. Gee, who would have guessed it. Businesses cycle through these particular buildings at too rapid a pace. The rents are way too high. Forget wraps, when Ben & Jerry's can't make it you are charging too much.

  10. And speaking of uptown news.Saturday, March 10th, will be McMurphy's 13th Annual Blarney Blowout. The doors will open at 11am or earlier depending on the line. There will be music, tons of free giveaways, and don't forget about the free Corn Beef as it wouldn't be St. Patty's Day without it. So show up early and get a spot in line as we Irish jig the day and night away.

  11. So the owners no longer have the guts to go before our illustrious Select Board to request allowance for a 10:00 AM alcohol serving time?

  12. The era of the college student willing to be treated like s*it but with bottomless pockets is over.

The social life of the student no longer centers on the college town -- and you will see more and more of this before long.

  13. Thanks, Ed. You should know as you've been a college student in every era since the 1980s.
