Flag Flap Deja Vu

Town flies flag daily (as does every municipality in Mass)

On August 27, almost exactly a year ago, the Amherst Select Board refused to allow the commemorative flags to fly in the downtown on 9/11.  Since the issue was officially on the agenda that night a simply majority vote could have made it happen.

Two of the Select Board members (Jim Wald and Alisa Brewer) have previously voted in the affirmative and Chair Stephanie O'Keeffe as a Town Meeting member voted to support the annual flying of the  flags on 9/11.

Last year the SB did meet again on 9/10 (oddly enough they are not meeting on Monday September 9 this year) and I again appeared before them -- this time during 6:30 PM "Public Comment" -- to make a last desperate plea to fly the flags.

But knowing they would not I also made a  request the board put this issue to rest once and for all.

How?

With a simply majority vote the Select Board can place an advisory question on the annual town election ballot.  I promised that night to abide by the direct decision of the voters.  I even returned to a Select Board meeting in March to remind them of the request.  They refused.

So here we are ... again.

A promise to "abide by the direct decision of the voters" means what from you?

A promise never to speak of it again?

No one believes that. We know that you will be beating our leaders over the head on a blessedly short list of issues (and bringing along unfair criticisms and caricatures of Amherst from out-of-touch local and national media outlets)until the day you die. We accept that.

Nothing that could conceivably happen tonight or in subsequent days would change that. Your identity in town, and the publicity that comes with it, depends on it. You revel in defeat, and the chance to blame the Town for it.

You sound a tad defensive. Even for a Cowardly Anon Nitwit.

Anyone catching the irony in the juxtaposition of Mr. Kelley posting a video of Ms. Perot not knowing when to quit, and then entertaining us with his never-ending flag quest?

Both Ms. Perot and Mr. Kelley have trouble with the realization that "that ship has sailed".

Larry Kelley said...

Yeah, only in this particular case the ship is the "RMS Titanic."

Nice try deflecting, Larry.

In fact, there is no difference between you and her. Because the Planning Board did not agree with her, she believed that its members were not listening.

Similarly, you believe that you can shame the Select Board into knuckling under. In reality, you won. The flags fly once every 5 years, and, if anyone tried to eliminate that, there would be a great furor about it.

You won, but you are not satisfied because it's the issue that gets you attention. And attention for you is really what this is all about.

Actually, these days, I get plenty of attention ... every single day.

And not just from trolls.

Really, you said all that just to tell Larry he likes attention?

Great, he likes attention...

(now, GTFO)

Walter that "GTFO" was not directed at Larry, it was directed at "August 26, 2013 at 11:32 AM".
