Smoke was visible for miles around
The fire broke out around 1:00 PM
Three dozen firefighters fought a two hour pitched battle with a massive blaze brought on by a car fire in the attached garage. The house appears to be a total loss but fortunately there were no major injuries to man or beast.
Can we blame college students for this? Resources being used by...
ReplyDeleteParking in garages is not typical for college students. The firefighters likely risked their lives so that some middle class mom did not have to feel a breeze or pay attention...you know, what they are there for. Most town resources are used by parents who cannot afford to educate their kids who overwhelmingly move away, plain and simple. Let us not blur that lest we end up not being able to afford basics.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Pomeroy Lane?
ReplyDeleteI don't understand what anon 11 :55 is trying to say. This poster does show the need for an education to be able to express a coherent thought.
ReplyDeleteHey 11:55-- Smoke a little more dope.
DeleteAnybody care to speculate on what caused the car in the garage to catch fire? How does that happen?
ReplyDeleteLightning
ReplyDeleteLightning. That seems plausible. Was the car the source of the lightning? There's some static electricity in seat belts, I've heard. Maybe Ed can weigh in here - he's an expert on... everything.

ReplyDeleteUsually either an overheated Cat Converter and/or a normally-functioning Cat (which operates at over 500 degrees -- its burning up those nasty Hydrocarbons and CO, which generates heat) igniting flammable materials such as grass & twigs.
This time of year it is common for mice to build nests on top of engines, which are not only sheltered but warm. Simple test, you open the hood and look for grass & twigs stuffed down somewhere, usually on the back (firewall side) of a FWD car. On top of the spark plugs is a popular spot.
No, it isn't supposed to be there and you do want to remove it.
Either parking over grass or snagging it by driving through a field can also do this, but that is more of a June/July thing.
Overfilling the oil can also do this, and that happens a lot more than you might think with the "dial" bulk oil dispensers. Excess oil causes the engine to smoke, Cat removes (burns up) that smoke (hydrocarbons) -- it's like a frat boy and grain ETOH...
I've seen both it and the header pipe glowing almost yellow (hotter than just red) -- it isn't hard for a fire to start when you have that much heat present.
And if you have anything leaking, particularly gasoline, things go downhill a lot faster....
Yeah ed...you must have some expertise on this matter.

ReplyDeleteI believe 8:20 was implying "arson."
It happens -- I've also heard of people intentionally wrecking the fancy car they can't afford -- and getting hurt a lot worse in the "accident" than they expected to.
Yeah ed...you must have some expertise on this matter.
ReplyDeleteAnd if I could have avoided sharing it with you, I would have.
I thought the question was legitimate -- and answered it as such.
Seems there may be a gap in the fire code....
ReplyDeleteWhy do people "pick on" Ed? I do not know who he is or why he is angry but he seems to answer some questions pretty well. My advice would be, do not ask him a question if you do not want to see what he has to say. He often makes more sense than many who write into this blog.
ReplyDeleteEd is a cranky canker....
