Sweet Downtown Addition

Glazed Doughnut Shop, Carriage Shops North Pleasant street

The new gourmet doughnut business -- appropriately called "Glazed Doughnut Shop" -- that opened last month on the northern town center outskirts debuted already using paper coffee cups because they assumed the Styrofoam ban would pass.

This is after all, Amherst. And who would better know Amherst than a pair of ARHS graduates, high school sweethearts no less.  In addition to knowing the town, Keren and Nick Rhodes also know doughnuts -- and how much work it takes to make them right.

Yes, their main competition, with three establishments in town, is Dunkin' Donuts -- but the abbreviated way they spell doughnuts should tell you something.

More variety than Dunkin'

  1. Such a great new addition—they have many unique varieties, and so far the ones I've tried have all tasted great!

The best part about this shop might well be the smell it spreads around downtown at night when the owners are baking fresh donuts...

  4. I wonder how long it will take the food cart guy to start selling doughnuts at the doorstep of this place. Because, as you know, they are RUTHLESS people wanting nothing more than to destroy local business.

  5. Their facebook page lists the daily doughnut menu and it is so mouthwatering! The doughnuts are very light and airy. They are going to be a special treat for our Christmas morning guests!

  6. When does a food cart stop becoming like some desert nomad that is "ruthless" and start being just as local as the other businesses in Amherst. Most of them live very close by. Sure food carts pay less, but last time I looked, this was a capitalist society where people try hard to earn a living and not a socialist society. Oh wait, I forgot, this is Amherst.

  9. Walter,

Yeah, it's a capitalist society, that's why businesses pay rent. See if you can set up your food cart in the middle of the mall.

  10. Well anonymous, guess what? You can set up your cart in the middle of the mall. All you have to do is pay the folks who own the mall to do it. Cost less than actually renting a store too. In fact you may have noticed malls all over do this regularly. At first the renters used to complain they were losing business but found out that it brings business and more foot traffic. Here's a secret, you look at more food as competition. In actually it brings more business to everyone in Amherst. Anyone who sells food or produce knows that. Ask any bar owner whether they want to be the only bar on the street or have other bars close by. And considering most of the food outlets in Amherst serve crap, a food cart is an occasional breath of fresh air. But it goes the other way too. The food outlets are a breath of fresh air from food carts. More food outlets mean more business for everyone.

  12. A classic Amherst voice. You talk but have no idea what you talk about. You must teach at one of those colleges. Life from a textbook. Clearly you've never owned a restaurant or food establishment. But like some in Amherst, you are first to jump on some silly bandwagon without any real knowledge or experience. And talk about skin, you don't have the guts to use a real name. Typical non voice.

  13. Look, you can't just park an RV, feed the meter and live in the center of town for a few dollars a month, so why should you be able to do the same with a food truck?

  14. Wow. That's actually a great idea. I'm going out to buy an RV right now!

  16. I am very glad to have a local alternative to the horror that is Bain Capital-and-Carlisle Group-owned Dunkin Donuts. The fact that it not only local, but also owned and operated by native Amherstonians, makes it that much more satisfying for *this* Amherst kid's sweet tooth...
