Say it ain't so Scott

Senator Scott Brown: dressed for a hike

I find it hard to believe that Senator Scott Brown would turn down the opportunity to speak at the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Newspaper Publishers Association, a conglomeration of every daily newspaper and about half the weeklies in the state of Massachusetts where he is now in pretty much a dead heat with a political rookie rock star, Elizabeth Warren--who is going to speak at the old fashioned Fourth Estate luncheon.

I mean, this is the guy who came to the People's Republic of Amherst--ground zero for entrenched liberal ideology dating back to the 1960s. Can a roomful of journalists possibly be any worse?

Sure newspapers are nowhere near what they used to be for providing news and information to the masses--especially those under age 30--but they are still a formidable institution, rock solid with older folks who always vote.

I don't care if your campaign is three times richer than Ms. Warren's, news coverage is priceless--and free!

  1. Clearly you've been hypnotized by Senator Brown, who appears to be a really nice guy.

So what? He's stuck in a party which is painting itself into an ideological corner. And they know how to punish any elected leader, including Senator Brown, who tries to step out of that corner.

  2. Oh I think he has stepped out of that corner, and it seems to me he did it because of something hard to find in politicians: principle.

And since that has made enemies in his own party, why snub the media and potentially add them to the list?

His PR director should turn in their smartphone.

  3. Why should Brown attend? The newspaper people are implacably hostile to him. All he does is give them an opportunity for gotcha questions and maybe some unflattering photos. He's got better things to do, like sponsoring legislation to stop Nancy Pelosi from getting rich off insider trading.

  4. He's in the big leagues now and should act accordingly.

When you have a core--and I believe he does--it's hard for anyone to succeed at gotcha.

But I agree he needs to multi-task and take on Princess Pelosi.

  5. I have never been able to figure out why normal average Americans who struggle to make ends meet day in and day out would support someone like Scott Brown or any number of Republicans who are in bed with the unethical, unscrupulous fat cats of Wall Street. The Republicans do not have your best interest at heart...they only answer to the wants and desires of the uber rich. The antics of the Republicans in congress have paralyzed our country and made us a laughing stock in the world. Mitch McConnell's number one priority is to make Obama a one-term president. Really??? That is his number one priority??? Not getting the economy on a solid footing once again? Not trying to make a dent in the over 9% unemployment??? Not working to improve our infrastructure or educational system??? Really Mr. McConnell????? The Republicans would rather run our country into the ground if it meant they could unseat President Obama. And they may succeed. Succeed in running our country into the ground that is. Why would anyone in their right mind support a party like that? Can someone please explain it to me?

  6. No, I can't. I'm an independent (or in Amherst we're called "unenrolled").

    I don't support parties, I support individuals--especially those who have a core.

  7. Politicians are always about transparancy and communication...until they get elected. Same old, same old.

  8. There's no such thing as a "gotcha" question to a public official (or really anyone, for that matter). You either know what you're talking about, or you don't.

Hate to tell you this, but Nancy Pelosi is a Democrat. Do you really think she has your back?

  10. Someone will have to point out to me Scott Brown's allegedly courageous stand on principle, in which he left his fellow lock-step Republicans. I missed it.

And, with the country at a standstill, is this enough to justify voting for him?

  11. A serious inspection of Ms. Warren's record of achievement is in order. She has already accomplished a great deal. Let's get by the assumptions we might make about Harvard professors, (and get past the stupid remarks about which candidate looks best with his/her clothes off), and look at who she really is: too populist for Barack Obama. She has talked the talk and walked the walk.

Turn off those prejudgement voices in your head, and give a listen to what the woman has to say. She understands how working and middle class people are getting ground down these days.
