APD quintet honored

Left to right: Officers Corsetti, Gutierrez, Soverino, (Detective) Lopez and Officer Guiles

I hate the Umass basketball radio commercials that seem to flood our local airwaves, but it was nice of the Athletic Department to honor five Amherst police officers for their military service to our country (some of it still ongoing) during a recent half time show.

And I guess it does tie in to the military style theme they use in those ubiquitous radio advertising spots.

  1. Thank you for your service. Too bad it's in a senseless war that even our Secretary of Defense regrets.

"But in my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should have his head examined."

  2. Does not diminish their service in the least.

A soldiers duty is to do what they are told. Easy for Monday morning quarterbacks to decide if that duty--carried out under a sense of honor-- was "senseless" or not.

  3. Didn't say their service was senseless, just the war.

  4. Thanks Amherst police for your service to our country.

Maybe UMASS B-Ball should also thank the members of the Amherst Fire Dept who have served in this war. They have three more leaving for Afghanistan in March. That is the problem with publicly singling out one group who sacrifice it might leaves the others unappreciated.

  5. Hey Ry,
    Good point.

UMass should also thank the town for providing them the quality Fire/ambulance service that we do.

  6. Perhaps some of us are not in it for the gratitude.

  7. Another very good point. I also assume you're not in it for the money.

I always try to say "Thank you," when I grab my coffee and papers early every morning at the local convenience store--even though chances are the clerks ARE into it for the money.

  8. Just because someone's in it for the money doesn't mean you shouldn't say thank you. People should still be polite because working people are just that, people not robots.

  12. I try to imagine leaving Sherri and my job to go off to a war zone for a year. I believe I owe them a heart felt thank you for having the conviction and courage to do so. I will always be grateful to those who serve the US military with dignity and pride. I grew up with a lot of them, they never once asked for appreciation but that does not diminish he need to say a simple thank you.

  13. Did it ever occur to any of you that maybe we wouldn't have had to fight this war if you had been just a little more cognizant of the concept of politics ending at the water's edge?

Hate to confuse any of you with the facts, but folk....

  14. Huh? There doesn't seem to be any facts at all in your statement.
