A birthday party to remember

So yes, the July 4th Parade went off without a hitch. Perfect weather, huge crowds in the downtown, a tight line of march with more marching units than ever. No protesters, no controversy. Life is good.

And yeah, the fireworks were pretty good too.

  1. More marching units than ever? We were all talking about how much less it seemed like. Yet to many were vehicles.

  2. Well, by marching units I meant "participating units" which of course were vehicle oriented.

Next year is our 10th anniversary. We will have more marching units (as in folks who walk) as well as even more vehicles.

  5. My take on the last 24 hours is that freedom does not exist in Amherst.

Which is, after all, named after a British military hero.

  6. Thanks Cambias,
Everybody was pretty happy with the results.

    Ed,
Come on, you know very well Lord Jeff was smart enough not to take on General Washington.

OK, fair enough, but remember that Amherst also voted NOT to ratify the Constitution. Which is perhaps reflective of some of the things that happen out here with frequency.

I really think that we need to Restore Lake Hitchcock!

I am no longer proudly flying an American flag because of what happened last night. I don't respect the integrity of the government anymore....

One other thing: George Washington was not a really good general -- in fact, he was a terrible colonel and did a horrible job during the prior French & Indian war.

Washington's great skill was as a diplomat and mediator, he was very good at that and those skills were very badly needed, but American military strategy was terrible until the French came in as advisors.

Not to say that the British really did much better -- at one point while the British ARMY was at war with the Patriots, the British NAVY was not, and did nothing when the Army's supply ships were being captured in the approaches to Boston Harbor, within sight of Boston.

  10. What happened on the 4th that Ed is talking about?

And Larry, are you back on the parade committee?

  11. Not sure what Ed is talking about (maybe he will fill us in)

No, I'm not back on the July 4 Parade Committee. Kevin called the night before and said he needed help staging so I did (and I'm so glad I did.)
