Amherst's Immigration policy

Amherst Town Meeting will discuss and no doubt pass a slew of warrant articles that increase fines for three ordinances aimed squarely at college students, our transient "visitors" that doubles the population for nine months out of the year and are oftentimes derided by locals for their criminal activities--mainly partying.

But these by-laws (noise, keg license and open container) will raise not a peep of protest--especially compared to the ruckus we are now seeing over the controversial Arizona law simply allowing local cops to enforce federal Immigration policy.

Minorities are more of a PC cause than college students. Maybe because the liberal elite figure college kids are young, smart and independent. And those damn independents don't always vote the party line.

If the Democrats come riding to the rescue on their white horses maybe minorities would be thankful enough to vote Democratic as a thank you. Even though it's the taxpayers who provide all the expensive enticements.

  1. Larry- What is the actual population without College students? Do we still linger around 30,000? And you article means we have 60,000 during the academic year??? thats crazy!

  2. Actual total population with college students is 34,874. Summer population has never been established, but is considered anywhere from 15,000 to 20,000.

  3. "the controversial Arizona law simply allowing local cops to enforce federal Immigration policy."

What part of the federal immigration law states that cops can stop anyone who looks like an immigrant and tell them to produce papers?

Don't all of us except the native americans look like immigrants?

  4. Actually I believe the new Arizona law specifically states a cop cannot stop anyone simply because of their looks. That is called "racial profiling."

It is only AFTER they have stopped someone for another offense--speeding, rolling through a stop sign, etc--that then can, after further questioning, demand proof of citizenship.

And unlike the Federal law--which requires actual citizenship papers--the Arizona authorities will accept something more simply like, you know, a drivers license.

And if someone was driving you would hope they had one of those.

When I get pulled over (very infrequently I might ad) the first thing a cop demands is "license and registration."

  5. Larry do you see any difference between people who are in the u.s. working, perhaps illegally, and students whose only aim at the time is to drink themselves into oblivion and then destroy whatever is in their path?

Your post implies we should think of students in amherst as transients and that the amherst liberals are two faced for encouraging the anti rioting laws and fines and not encouraging the new law in az.

You seriously want us to think these two scenarios are equal?

Are you ok, Larry, because this logic is ridiculous.

Some students party way beyond the acceptable limits trash others' property, throw bottles at local police and fire fighters, and you want us all to accept that because these spoiled brats are transient.

Get back on the meds. You're embarrassing yourself, if that is still possible.

Go ahead and thrash away at my anon status, but do step back and think about the maturity of your thinking.

  6. I guess I don't have to thrash away at your Anon status. You already did it for me.

  7. I don't believe that we are so naive as to think that police won't take it upon themselves to just stop someone under the guise of "reasonable suspicion" no matter how the Arizona law is actually written. It must be chilling to those people who lived in Russia when it was Soviet, or survived Nazi Germany. That "Show me your papers" could possibly be demanded of an obvious minority person in a car or on the street is all too reminiscent of a time in the world's history that we should all be ashamed of. This law is just asking to be abused by an "enthusiastic" law enforcement official. This is an America that's headed for very serious trouble. It's not the America we intended.

  8. The reason why the students are not protesting this is because the university has become fascist.

Why do you think Milligan left? He realized that he was trying to sell an un-sellable product. Jean Kim is destroying the place and there are maybe *MAYBE* five more years of the cash cow in town.

Do you have any idea how many kids are taking classes on line? How many are down in DC or Boston or somewhere doing an internship and taking their classes on line? And how many are going to be in a whole lot more friendly place and taking classes on line in the near future?

22 years ago, I told people that the paper mills of Millinocket and East Millinocket (ME) were on borrowed time. People laughed. Now the mills have largely closed, the towns have died, and I will be right again about Amherst....

BTW - how much does the town have in insurance coverage? If the class action suit against the police gets anywhere near as big as I think it might, that could bankrupt the town. Imagine: the drunken college kids seizing (with judicial order) the police cruisers...
